Tucked into the eastern side of Baja California Sur, Loreto, is the perfect place for a active getaway, or a lazy one – take your pick. The area is sheltered from Pacific storms, and has some of the most unspoiled and swimmable beaches in Baja, This is just a few of the many things to do in Loreto. There are miles of riding trails, hiking routes that follow the trails of the Jesuits who founded the first missions, and the warm waters along the Sea of Cortez are brimming with colorful fish. Take a guided tour for a day or an overnight mule trek to see archeological sites with pictographs and petroglyphs that are thousands of years old.
A short drive on well maintained roads will take you past miles of secluded beaches to smaller towns in the Loreto area including Mulege. It’s an expat favorite with a beautifully intact mission, several excellent restaurants and a small but interesting museum in what was once “a jail without walls”. Guided day trips are one of the best ways to experience all the things there are to do in the Loreto area while learning about its history and culture.
