Kilkenny Castle was one of the best preserved cast Kilkenny Castle was one of the best preserved castles that we visited in Ireland. It was built in 1260 and remained in private hands until 1967 when it was sold for 50 pounds to the Office of Public Works. The OPW does a wonderful job restoring and maintaining Ireland's historic buildings and landmarks. Kilkenny Castle is no exception. After falling into disrepair over the centuries, most of the furniture was sold at auction, except for the massive table seen under the set of prehistoric deer antlers. It was too heavy to move. The OPW furnished the home through auctions and donations to recreate the home as it would have looked like in the 19th century, complete with chamber pots. The handpainted wallpapers and decorative elements are such a contrast to the way we live today. There's a playground, a rose garden and a large man made lake on the grounds and a tea room that unfortunately we had to pass up. Like most of our trip, there was too much to see and not enough time #loveireland

So happy to have been able to see The Long Room in So happy to have been able to see The Long Room in the Library at Trinity College before it closes for an extensive restoration. All the books will be cleaned and catalogued, and the latest fire prevention measures will be put in place to protect them. The 45 minute walking tour of the campus is a fascinating mix of history, politics and ghost stories. Did you know that Trinity was established in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, but no women attended until 1904? While the library is being refurbished, the famous Book of Kells museum will be replaced by the Book of Kells Experience, a highly interactive, multimedia deep dive into the Book of Kells and the library itself. Until the end of 2025, your ticket will grant you access to both sites. The beautiful Brian Boru harp, the oldest harp in Ireland, and the country's national symbol, is housed here. Floating above, and rotating with a gentle hum, is Gaia, an illuminated sculpture of Earth by Luke Jerrom. Over 200,000 books are waiting for their makeover in this book lover's dream room.
