Calling all #yyc gardeners! Plant sale and market Calling all #yyc gardeners! Plant sale and market at Lougheed House this weekend. Free art workshops, 30 vendors, and free admission to the historic house 📸 @theinformedtraveler #lougheedhouse
Lougheed House in Calgary treated us to a tour of Lougheed House in Calgary treated us to a tour of their latest exhibition and beautiful gardens. Built in 1890 by James and Isabella Lougheed, great-grandparents of Peter Lougheed, the sandstone mansion was auctioned off during the Great Depression and purchased by the City. It served as a training facility for the Canadian Women's Army Corp after WWII and later as the national HQ of the Canadian Red Cross.
The gardens are maintained by volunteers ranging in age from 20 to 80 and led by Head Gardener Joan Reksten, who gave us a tour of the 2.8 acre site. Hollyhocks, roses, and annuals were all in bloom.
Remarkably, the original stained glass windows, ornate woodwork, and plasterwork cupids remain. Open to the public since 2005, the garden is a popular place for wedding photos, and the house hosts English style afternoon teas, house tours, and even a monthly historically themed trivia night.
